2010 Leo Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir- Coming Soon!

89 Points- KensWineGuide.com review
Gold Medal- 2013 San Diego International Wine Competition

$56.00
750ml

Just as Jeff and Ingrid had named the 2007 vintage after their daughter- Ella Sofia, they have dedicated the 2010 wines in celebration of their son Leo, born August 9 of that year.

The hue of our 2010 pinot is an alluring deep garnet with hints of blue. The nose reveals rich, bright cherry fruit backed up by impressions of earth, spice, violet and sweet wood. This wine is medium-bodied with a touch of richness and viscosity, put into balance by the present, but integrated, tannins. Flavors of black cherry, vanilla and caramelized wood shine through on the palate.

The 2010 growing season was long and cool in California, however, there was a heat spell toward the end of the pinot vintage, causing over-ripening on grapes that had their shade leaves pulled in order to let in the much needed sunshine. Those vines that had not yet been picked and still had their fruit protected by the leaves fared significantly better and produced some beautiful and elegant wines, as is the case with this Leo pinot.

The grapes were harvested from vineyards in the heart of the Sonoma Coast, near the Russian River. After night picking, they were hand-sorted into open top fermenters, fermented dry and allowed to finish Malo-lactic in barrel. The wine was aged in 30% new French oak for nine months, then bottled unfined/unfiltered.

This is our fourth vintage of Pinot. The 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is composed of vineyards near the border of the Russian River AVA. With its broad range of temperatures and composition of loam soils, the Sonoma Coast AVA is perfect for Pinot Noir that is intended to have great structure paired with fruit and earth characteristics. The 2009 vintage for these vineyards was similar to the celebrated 2007 vintage. There was plenty of heat to ripen evenly, on time, and with no worries.

On the nose it displays ripe fruit aromas of raspberry, cherry and strawberry with notes of mineral, earth and smoky oak. On the palate, there are concentrated flavors of dried cherry and ripe raspberry with a hint of dark chocolate and vanilla. It has a nice, long, fruit driven finish. This wine would be excellent with medium dishes, such as duck comfit or pomegranate salmon. This pinot’s fruit will hold well for about 6 years from vintage date, but will maintain longer showing aged qualities.

The grapes were picked at 25.3° Brix, destemmed into small open-top tanks, and after a two day cold soak, punched down twice daily by hand in order to gain gentle extraction from the skins without harsh tannins. The vineyard lots were fermented separately, the wine was inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional burgundian barrels. It was bottled without fining or filtration.

The 2008 Jeff Gordon Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir comes from two vineyards, one located on the western edge of the city of Santa Rosa at the southeastern edge of the Russian River Valley and the second, just east of the Russian River south of the town of Healdsburg.

This Pinot Noir is ruby to garnet in color. On the nose it displays ripe fruit aromas of cherry, strawberry, and spice with notes of flinty-earth and smoky oak. On the palate, there are concentrated flavors of bright-cherry, hard candy, and vanilla. It has a nice, long, fruit driven finish. This wine would be excellent with glazed duck, roast turkey, or orange chicken.

The grapes were picked at 25.0° Brix, destemmed into small open-top fermenters, and punched-down twice daily by hand. Following fermentation, the wine was inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional burgundian barrels. “This wine is dedicated to my daughter, Ella Sofia, born in 2007—the only vintage of the Jeff Gordon Collection that will carry her name as it commemorates the happiness she has brought me. I truly hope you enjoy the complexities and subtle flavors of the wine as it matures with Ella Sofia.”

This Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir comes from a Dijon Clone planted vineyard, which is located on the western edge of the city of Santa Rosa at the southeastern edge of the Russian River Valley.

This wine is ruby to garnet in color. On the nose it displays ripe fruit aromas of raspberry, cherry, and strawberry with notes of dark earth and smoky oak. On the palate, there are concentrated flavors of dried cherry, hard candy, and vanilla. It has a nice, long, fruit driven finish. This wine would be excellent with crispy duck or roasted chicken.

The grapes were picked at 25.2° Brix, destemmed into small open-top fermenters, and punched-down twice daily by hand. Following fermentation, the wine was inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional burgundian barrels. The barrels used were 30% new oak from the Allier forest in France, and 70% two and three year old French barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for 8 months prior to bottling. It was bottled without fining or filtration.

This is a blend of “Burgundy” and “California” styles. Initially, the wine shows hints of earth and mushroom which slowly fade to bright aromas of violets, cherries and vanilla spice. In the month, there are plenty of plum and raspberry fruit flavors which finish round, rich and warm. This approachable wine will pair well with any season pork or fowl and salmon. It also would be delicious with a slightly marinated portabello mushroom right off the grill.

After hand sorting, the clusters were de-stemmed into a small open-top container. After a two-day cold soak, the must was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast. The cap was punched down twice daily by hand. After a gentle pressing, the wine was inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional Burgundian barrels. The barrels used were 35 percent new French oak and 65 percent two-and-three-year-old French oak. The wine was barrel aged for 10 months, bottled without fining or filtration and then bottle-aged for 12 months before release.
